Turkey update 2006

I am happy to report that my turkey turned out quite nicely this year using the turkey recipe a few posts back. It was nice and moist, and was enjoyed by all. I have to say though, that I’m always disappointed that the flavor of the seasonings doesn’t ever really permeate the meat the way I would like. Maybe next year I’ll have to inject my turkey with some kind of seasoning or something like that. I guess I have 364 days to plan, so by then I should be able to come up with something good.

I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving, and are enjoying the long weekend!

Thanksgiving 2006: This year’s turkey recipe

This year, my turkey is an 11.4 pound Butterball, and was prepared as follows:

  1. Remove all the extra stuff and rinse the bird. Put it in a roasting pan on a v-rack.
  2. Coarsely cut up four carrots, half an onion, two pink lady apples, and four stalks of celery.
  3. Cut up some basil.
  4. Melt two sticks of butter in the microwave.
  5. Stir the basil into the melted butter.
  6. Add some cumin, pepper, rosemary, and salt and stir the melted butter mixture together.
  7. Using your hands, separate the skin from the turkey breast and rub the turkey breast with the butter mixture.
  8. Stuff the inside of the bird with half of your veggies. Put the other half in the roasting pan.
  9. Pre-heat the oven to 500 degrees.
  10. Put the turkey in the oven at 500 degrees for 30 minutes.
  11. Once the turkey is in the oven, take the giblets out of the bag that they came in and rinse them.
  12. Put the giblets in a sauce pan with chicken broth, two pressed cloves of garlic, pepper, and half a stick of butter. You will use this to baste the bird while it’s cooking.
  13. After 30 minutes, reduce the heat to 350 degrees and cover the turkey breast with an aluminum foil hat (haha).
  14. Cook the turkey until the breast is right around 160 degrees.
  15. Let the turkey stand for 30 minutes and enjoy!

The Del Taco Jalapeno Burger Scramble

On our way home last night from arguably the best Halloween party ever, Meghan and I stopped by Del Taco for a midnight snack. I picked up the new Jalapeno Burger, but by the time we got home I was more interested in sleep than food. So into the fridge the burger went.

This morning while laying in bed, I had an epiphany. I decided that the burger would make an excellent scramble, and would serve as my breakfast. The recipe is quite simple, and delightfully delicious.

I cut the burger in half, then cut that half into bite-size chunks. I thre those in the frying pan with some olive oil and let it heat up for a few minute while I got the eggs ready. I beat two eggs together with some milk, then added that to the burger in the frying pan. I then added some Del Scorcho sauce and scrambled it all together until the eggs were done.

I know it sounds weird, but I really think the the burger breakfast scramble is the next big thing. Give it a try next time you’re looking for an original breakfast treat.
