Although it is now two years after Katrina hit, I have no doubt that things aren’t much different than they were a year ago when Greg Palast filmed this documentary. This is a three parter, friends, but is only half an hour long. Take a look at it with an open mind, and remember that the disaster that the destruction that Katrina caused was largely due to negligence (and arguably due to specific malicious intent) on the part of our leaders. And the fact that the gulf states, and New Orleans in particular, are still not rebuilt is a direct result of incompetence.
It sounds like a staggering statistic, but it turns out that one in four home sale transactions in the UK collapse following the initial formal offer. In addition, nine out of ten people in teh UK are unhappy with the buying process.
In an effort to combat this nasty situation, in June 2007, the Home Information Pack was introduced. The Home Information Pack, or HIP, will include:
Sales Statement - Detailing the conditions of sale agreed.
Evidence of Ownership
Energy Performance Certificates - Giving each home a rating of between A and G based upon the homes energy efficiency and include advice to make the home more efficient.
Gaurantees and Warranties - If the property is new.
Searches and other legal documents.
Although I have never participated in a UK based home transaction, this sounds like a great idea, and should smooth the process significantly.
I was just thinking about it, and wonder if any other President in the history of the United States has presided over the mass slaughter of as many civilians as George W. Bush?
To start it all off, 2,819 civilians were killed in the attacks of 9/11/2001. Following that, 1,400 people were killed when Katrina hit the gulf states. That’s a total of 4,219 civilians so far. And that’s not counting the thousands of 9/11 rescue workers who have been plagued and killed by lung problems after the fact.
Of course we have had tragedies in our past. The death toll for the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was estimated at 3,000. And obviously murder rates fluctuate and people die, but I’m talking about mass casualties, not overall casualties.
So I really think that George takes the cake. Congratulations George W. Bush, you’re the winner of the “Which President Can Kill the Most Citizens Award”! Nice work.
Today, as you may or may not know, is the two year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Also as you may or may not know, things are not any better down in New Orleans than they were two years ago. Families have been split up, senior citizens are living in conditions comparable to third world countries, and the affected areas are still an absolute mess.
How in the fuck, in the United States of America, are citizens allowed to live like this? While George Bush lines his rich friends’ pockets with war profits and no-bid contracts, American citizens are left to waste away in what was once one of America’s most amazing cities.
It truly is an embarrassment to see this happening to such kind and well meaning people. And as much as no one wants to admit it, this is a race war. If an earthquake hit California, especially Orange County, you would get whiplash watching the federal reconstruction funds roll in. But down in Louisiana where the poor folks live, our government could give a fuck.
Have you ever thought about visiting Australia? If you have, you probably know that Sydney and Melbourne offer a plethora of exciting opportunities to take in the sites and culture of Australia.
If you find yourself staying in a Sydney Hotel, and wondering what exactly to do with your lovely Australian afternoon, why not check out the Sydney Fish Markets (one of the largest in the world), or maybe take a trip to Sydney Wildlife World to see some of Australia’s unique and interesting different species of wildlife.
What about if you’re staying in a Darling Harbour Hotel? Darling Harbour has some exciting entertainment offerings, including seeing the sites via monorail, or just taking in some of the outdoor entertainment. No matter what you’re in the mood for, Darling Harbour is one of Sydney’s largest dining, shopping and entertainment areas and most likely has exactly what you’re looking for.
If you end up in a Melbourne Hotel, you’re in luck too. Melbourne offers a dazzling array of restaurants, cafes, bistros and bars where you can take in its unique, eclectix, and eccentric culture. And if you want to venture out a bit further, you can visit Richmond for cheap and cheerful Vietnamese dishes, Carlton for Italian classics, Fitzroy for tantalising Spanish tapas.
No matter where you end up staying in Australia, you’re bound to have a great time.
First of all, with Gonzales we knew exactly what we were fighting against. We knew his tactics, and at least knew what to expect. Now that Bush has the opportunity to appoint a new Attorney General, we’ll be stepping back into uncharted waters.
Second, like I just mentioned, Bush now has the opportunity to select someone new. And with the names that are being tossed around (Michael Chertoff of Homeland Security fame for one), we’re not going to be much better off anyway. And is the Senate really going to have the balls to fight Bush on whomever his appointee is? I sincerely doubt it.
As much as I want to count this as a victory, it really is not. We’re just going to end up with some other neocon asshole anyway. I think the moral is that instead of pursuing these small victories that can be easily overturned, we need to forumulate a unified strategy to get these bastards out of office. Again, we really do need to completely clean house.
If you have ever known a person stricken by Alzheimer’s disease, you know how disabling it is to the victim, and how troubling it is for their family and friends. Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that normally strikes victims over 65 years of age. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, and its effects include memory loss, change in behavior, and the inability to maintain everyday care of oneself.
I had a great aunt who had Alzheimer’s when I was very young. I remember not understanding what was going on with her despite my parent’s better efforts to explain it to me. The thing that I remember the most is how quickly her condition worsened. I normally only saw her on Christmas Eve, and I remember her being fairly normal one year, and the very next she had no idea who I was. Compared to the symptoms that she could have experienced, memory loss was certainly not the worst.
I do remember how heartbreaking it was for my family to have a beloved aunt still alive who was just not herself. I didn’t understand at the time, but now that I’m older I definitely get it.
Unfortunately, very little is known about Alzheimer’s. Its ultimate cause is still unknown, which makes it very difficult to predict, let alone avoid. Genetics are suspected to be a part of the cause of the disease, as are exposure to aluminum, smoking, a lack of consistent brain activity later in life, and poor cardiovascular health.
Fortunately, someone is doing something about it. The Alzheimer’s Association has created the Memory Walk to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research and prevention, and they need YOU to be a team captain.
If you have known anyone stricked with Alzheimer’s, you know how important this is. Sign up today, and do your part to help make this awful disease only a memory.
As if it wasn’t bad enough that George W. Bush has repeatedly tied pre-Iraq War Iraq to Al Quaeda, now he is blaming 9/11 on our withdrawl from Vietnam, and saying that we should have stayed in Vietnam longer.
This kind of doublespeak is a constant issue with Mr. Bush. First he suggests that Iraq and Al Quaeda are in cahoots, and underhandedly blames Iraq for 9/11, but then says that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Now he says Iraq is nothing like Vietnam, then he connects the two. Whatever works for his own personal gain and the benefit of his crony friends is what he says. Can’t we see that this guy never ever tells us the truth, especially when it has to do with Iraq?
We really need to impeach this fucker, put all of the mainstream media back in the people’s hands, and take back our country. The United States really is no longer the fine country it was intended to be.
