The Omen (2006): A few brief notes

Last night my friends and I had a wine and cheese and horror movie party. We had dinner, had some drinks, and watched some horror movies.

The first movie we watched was “The Omen,” the one that came out on 06/06/06. It pretty much follows the story of the first one, only takes place in 2006 intead of the mid-70’s, which would make sense since it’s a “remake.”

One of the reasons that I am such a horror fan is that it takes me away from reality, and allows me to forget everything in a freaky strange world where people have problems much bigger than mine (beacuse being tied up in famly drama bullshit is much less disconcerting when you compare it with being the parents of a little Satan). I was a bit bothered, and was momentarily prevented from going to my…uhhh…happy place(?) beacause of the filmmakers’ decision to use footage from the WTC collapse, the Columbia disaster, and the Thailand tidal wave to set the foundation for Damien’s coming. It seemed a bit out of place and awkward to me, plus the constant profiteering from these disaters makes me sick, although that’s a topic for another post.

Unfortunately, as creepy and suspenseful as the first Omen was, this one failed to capture the feeling and suspense of the original. I have slowly come to the conclusion that the horror of the ’70’s is unbeatable when it comes to overall feeling, mainly because of the low budget nature of the effects and that ’70’s film quality that just seems so homemade and freaky.

The Omen was not bad, but just didn’t capture the magic of the first. The bottom line is if you really want to check out The Omen, rent the first one.

Get locked up for your twisted thoughts…

Yes friends, we are headed for a world like Minority Report. American citizens, minors no less, are being locked up for what they are thinking about doing. In Camden County, NJ, a 15 year old boy has been locked up for six years in state prison, charged and sentenced as an adult for “conspiring to possess a handgun.”

Does anyone else see the irony here? The GOP is in power. They are presumably the party against gun control. And they are the ones under whom a minor has been sent to adult prison for wanting to own a gun. Not owning a gun, mind you. Not actually trying to do anything bad with a gun. But thinking about owning a gun.

How can anyone possibly argue that our rights aren’t being violated, and that we still live in a free country, when things like this happen? I’m not buying the bullshit, I’ll tell you that much.

PPP Puzzle Piece #178

I get more and more curious about this whole payperpostbluemonster contest with every new puzzle piece I see. I have been trying to track down all of the puzzle pieces, but it takes a lot of work. As you can see by this piece, they are already close to 200 puzzle pieces.

With this many puzzle pieces out there, I can only imagine that this contest is going to unleash an amazing announcement that will be revolutionary to the growing blog marketing market. I’m looking forward to it, even if I don’t win.

It doesn’t take much of a brain…

If you really want to see through the lies that we’re fed on a daily basis, it’s really not that difficult. A remedial dose of critical thinking will quickly disperse the fog, and make reality abundantly clear.

For example, take the GOP’s stance that a vote for anyone other than a GOP candidate is a vote for the terrorists. If we take a step back, and really think about that statement, we realize that it is a total lie. I’m not saying that the democrats are any better, all I’m saying is that this is an outright lie designed to scare people into voting for the GOP.

Who was in office in 2001 when the tragic 9/11 event happened? Yup, Dictator….err, President Bush. He’s GOP. How can they possibly argue that their party will protect us against terrorism when they were the ones in power when the most heinous terror event struck the American people? If you have any understanding of logic, you realize that this argument makes no sense at all.

Many of the other lies that we are told every day are just as transparent as the above mentioned one. It just takes a little pinch of critical thinking and logic to see the truth, or at least see through the lies.

I guess my efforts are paying off…

Lately I have been trying to make my website more search engine friendly, and have begun a home-grown SEO process based upon free information on the Internet. I had not really seen any huge benefits up until today, but I’m happy to say that my erfforts are working out.

The way I know is that I finally got my first blog comment spam message, which pretty much tells me that the spambots are hitting my site finally, which I assume also means that the Google bots are also hitting my site more frequently now. Looks like it’s time to turn on Akismet on liamferris.com too now. Woo hoo, what a way to start a Friday! Success!!

Real estate again…

I must admit that for the first part of this year, real estate gave me a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I had some experiences that taught me a lot, but that were extremely frustrating and turned me off to it for a while. Lately though, I have been thinking about getting back into it, and have taken the appropriate steps to do so.

A the end of August, I attended a probate auction for two mobile homes with a friend’s dad who is a real estate investor. Basically I watched him make more than my yearly salary in a day.

As if that wasn’t enough motivation, this year I feel like my Halloween plans are going really well. I have created some great props and a cool facade, and have learned a ton about prop automation. This reminded me that what I really want to do with my life is work most of the year at my current job, and make enough money in real estate to be able to spend three or more months a year making a professional haunt for the Halloween season.

This time I’m going to be more careful about who I deal with, and the things that I end up doing in real estate. I really like it, and it’s a great way to make some cash on the side and be able to spend more time with the people I love.

They also have a blog, so you can keep up with what’s going on in the world of beach cruisers.
